What is Synchronous and Asynchronous Instruction?
Much of what goes on in a physical classroom is built on an assumption of “shared time,” during which instructors teach and students learn. The class time is predetermined, and everyone involved expects to arrive at a common location and interact with one another at that set time. However, in a blended or online course model, there is no guarantee that students can be available to work concurrently with
you or with each other. In order to effectively teach in the blended or online model, you will need to tailor your course content with this in mind. The time-bound nature of instruction is referred to as either synchronous or asynchronous.
